Shared Data

Aggregating, analysing, and sharing data for the benefit of donors, charities, and the public.

An initiative of the Foundation for Shared Impact

What is Shared Data?

Shared Data is an initiative by the Foundation for Shared Impact (FSI) that aims to aggregate, analyse, and share data for the benefit of donors, charities, and members of the public.

We believe that by collecting objective, quantifiable data, social impact actors will better be able to identify problems and intervention points within their own organisations and use the information to improve processes and projects. Multiplied across the sector, the sector will drive a more inclusive, innovative, and resilient society that can effectively enact change and expand its impact.

How data drives impact

Around the world, data collection and usage is being used in many ways to drive social impact and systems change. Shared Data aims to bring best practices here:

  • Organisational transparency — Public resources that show what social impact organisations do, who is involved, and what beneficiaries think. Democratising philanthropy so funders know who and what they fund and how money is used.
  • Impact assessment — Identifying impact metrics, establishing data collection procedures, and building dashboards so organisations and funders can see in real time what is and isn’t working.
  • Data aggregation and collaboration — Organisations collaborating to aggregate, share, and analyse data to drive research, policy initiatives, and multi-organisation projects.
  • Government transparency — Making government data understandable for citizens and helping organisations and people see how public spending can improve effectiveness.
  • Industry transparency — Aggregating and visualising information about social impact industries so we can see where funding is spent and which areas still need support.
